eve of change

February 20th, 2010 3 comments

1 year ago today my 10+ year career came to an end at ForeSystems/Marconi/Ericsson and since then life has been most educational. I don’t think anyone ever knew how close I was to packing up the family and moving out of state. Thankfully I said no and now have an amazing job doing something I love.

There isn’t much to say about the last day. I came in at 9am, turned in my laptop at 11 and was unemployed by 11:30am. I left immediately because, and this you probably didn’t know either, went downtown to meet with Dennis Roddy from the Post Gazette. He wanted to do a story on me about unemployment and how I was going to handle being a dad-to-be and jobless. The story never went to press (at least not that i know of) but he did take some incredible video I heard. Hey Dennis, still have it?  It was an emotional interview and he was smart getting me moments after I was let go.

So now we’re here 1 year later and on the eve of my 34th birthday. I have a great job, a fantastic family that I would do anything for even when Teaspoon beats on me while I sleep and I have a giant vagina in my ceiling. Eh, 2 outta 3 ain’t bad.

Thank you 2009! pt1.

December 31st, 2009 5 comments

I have to admit that this has been the most life changing year of my life. Some good, some bad and some mind blowing kickass. Here’s a quick recap as I reflect before tonight’s festivities start. I’m splitting this up into 2 sections because lets be honest, no one will scroll through 12 months.

January
Reflected on the first beer I EVER drank and yes, I kept the bottle. Prepare for the end of my 10+ year employment at ForeSystems/Marconi/Ericsson. Bitched about the weather and yinzers inability to drive in snow plus dumb ass snow removal by my neighbors. Both of those still hold true today. Got ready for an unbelievable run to the Super Bowl

February
Steelers won the Super Bowl and became the first ever 6 time champ thus giving every knock off t-shirt maker starry eyes at the potential of “6 pack” shirts. Punxy Phil said 6 more weeks of winter. I was officially laid off, was interviewed for a Post Gazette story on unemployment moments after i was laid off (that never was published), Pens started to turn it around and the biggest shock of them all… Teaspoon arrived 2 months early making me the happiest and most terrified dad. Came in at 4.1lb, dropped to 3.2lb and would leave at 5 in March.

March
It was the month of Teaspoon. Lushie and I spent every minute we could at the Mercy NICU while he got healthy in an incubator. 28 days later he came home. Also witnessed the stupidity of some Hill District parents who think its a hotel in there and the joke that is unemployment system in PA.

April
Went to my first ever Rugby match and got addicted to watching Claire and the girls kick ass. Missed my first opening day of Pirates baseball since 1984 (watched it on TV with Teaspoon and started a new tradition with my boy). Bought a Wii. Enjoyed the greatest comeback in Pens Playoff hockey that I have witnessed as the Pens turned the series around with 1 fight and the Max Talbot shhhhhhh! Saw Beer Wars the Movie with hundreds of other craft beer fans around the world and baked an incredible beer ham for Easter.

May
Should I Drink That turned 3. Pens defeated Washington and Carolina to earn a second trip to the Stanley Cup Finals for a 2nd year. Bought a Blackberry. Joined Sadie’s Soldiers and took some Great Strides. KDKA reads my “tweet of the day” which I WISH they would bring back. The great personalized jersey debate. Meatshield welcomed his first child (i swear it was the year for kids to be born) and we had a cookout with some family. Bowling league ended and we were the undisputed champs.

June
Teaspoon’s first trip to the ER. Coming out of golf retirement after 3.5 year for a day with Yinz Teamer’s Woy, Lokay and Shireman at Cranberry Highlands. The Clarks release Restless Days after 5 years. Pens win the Stanley Cup in 7 games vs Detroit. Pittsburgh floods… again. Unemployed Utensil makes his first appearance as a way to help me get through not working. My first Father’s day and Pirates waste of talent Ian Snell cant take negative people.

up next… July through December.

One year ago today – Ericsson

November 20th, 2009 6 comments

As I type this post it’s been one year to the moment that Ericsson notified all of the workers in Warrendale that we were no longer a “strategic location” and would be shutting us down. One month later I would receive notice that I was leaving in the first round and last day would be February 20th, the day before my birthday. Nice kick in the nuts eh?

I’ve never spoken of what exactly happened and how we were told so here you go.

I came in that day between 8-8:30am. I was wrapping up documentation on the Vista refresh that I had just completed and figured it to be an easy day. (I was the project coordinator for refreshing our North American locations from XP to Vista. Organizing collection and redistribution of machines plus transferring data and scrapping machines that couldn’t be used. Thankfully I had a great team working with me.)  An email arrives that there is a mandatory meeting on the manufacturing floor around 9:30. I figure this is for a bonus or something cool. It would turn out I was WAY off.

I walk down with my manager Mike and we’re all huddled together as rumors start surfacing that something is going down. Are we getting sold again? (We were originally FORE Systems, sold to Marconi and then sold to Ericsson). One of the upper management members comes in and we could tell something was wrong as he’s shaken up. He informs us that Ericsson has decided to close the Warrendale office and we will be all laid off or given the chance to work in another location. “WTF! i have a kid on the way and my wife turned in her notice for the end of the year! wtf am I going to do!” We’re then told that everyone must go to the auditorium for further instruction.

Walking into the Sansom Auditorium was like attending a funeral for the sudden death of a loved one. People were crying, others were angry and confused. I was in shock. I started tweeting and IM’ing from the meeting that this can’t be happening. It was starting to make sense though why the Swedes were giving us so much grief for being proactive and hauling more ass than the rest of the US but whatev.  There is a slide presentation but I half ass watch it. I don’t care what your reasoning is, you just stabbed me in the heart.

After the meeting we’re all told to go back to our desks and management would give us further instruction. We were told not to speak to anyone in the media, make posts or even speak of the layoffs. Naturally the local news media swarmed our office and wanted comments (this is where my despise for the Trib and WPXI stem from). I had decided to stay the whole day so I could start backing my data up when employees were swarming the windows. Those who did decide to leave at noon were being hounded for comments. People were in tears and the cameras kept rolling. Andy Gastmeyer was the absolute worse and to this day when I see him I get furious. He chased one employee from the door to his car and showed it on the news that night. I saw security come around the corner though not sure what happened.

The day ended and as I walked to my car a reporter from the Trib followed me from the steps all the way to my car asking for a comment. She would not go away and, I still hear this in my head “I’m a reporter, you owe it to me to tell your story”. I turned around with a few choice words on where she could put her tablet and walked away. Pissed me off enough I haven’t picked up an issue since.

I went home to have dinner with Lushie and a few beverages that night.  I still came to work Friday and waited to see what would happen next. In order to get my severance package I would have to complete a list of tasks which you’ll read more about in February when I recap the last few days.

To all my former coworkers out there I will raise a pint tonight. This marked the beginning of the end of an incredible 10+ year ride through the corporate world and little did I know just how crazy this was going to become.

cheers!

Crazy Week pt3 – New Job

August 10th, 2009 9 comments

theoffice

I was in employment limbo for a long time. 5 months to be exact. I signed on for contract work that turned out to be a long wait for tasks and turned into something that paid the bills but was unsatisfying. I knew a job was out there which would showcase my talents but settled for less to get my family by.

Today that changes as I start a new job.

Today I start work that will go back to my FORE Systems roots (not as an intern though) as a web developer & new social media coordinator.

Today I start work that has the potential to release what Ericsson refused to address.

Today I start work with creative freedom that has been unmatched to this point

Today I start work unleashing the inner Doug.

Today I am spoon.

Today rocks.

Introducing the Unemployed Utensil

YouTube Preview Image

4 months ago today I was laid of from my job of 10+ years at Ericsson. That next day I started something on You Tube that I had every intention on updating daily. I created the Unemployed Utensil as a way for me to cope with life without work and fill that void during the day while Lushie was at work. I was on a roll that first week until February 28th came and changed my life forever. The arrival of Teaspoon. Fatherhood consumed my time and UU got pushed back. I wouldn’t say it was a FAIL since being a dad is a full time job  but I may revisit it soon since I’m still seeking employment.

At first I was going to keep this as a private project but now Studio B needs some activity and I have plenty to vent about. I’ve been playing with an intro that I may add and also have toyed with a podcast for dad’s. I’ve seen many for mom’s and women but very few for dad’s. Something else to add to my list of cool things I want to do this summer.

Final Countdown

December 19th, 2008 2 comments

(that’s right… it’s Europe)

February 20th is the target for my final date of employment. The day before my 33rd birthday. Kick in the nuts eh? Those of you who follow me on the various social networking sites already know this news but for everyone else this is the official notice. I cracked a joke that the slip I was given wan’t even pink. Apparently there was cost involved in colored paper. Couldn’t even humor me. *sheesh*

I could bitch that it happened right before Christmas but everyone knew the first round was coming. Am I bitter? Not really. I think I’m still in denial. Over these last 10 years my coworkers have become family which is why I always loved working here. I’m going to take the holiday to weigh my options and seriously entertain ideas I’ve had for awhile. Heck, I could take the next year off if I wanted to but I don’t think Lushie would be able to tolerate me after the first 2 weeks. Moving out of the area isn’t out of question now if I can find employment elsewhere. I’d like to stay here but honestly, gotta go where the work is. Lushie said she’ll go wherever as long as there is a plane ticket back in case of emergency.

tomorrow we’re supposed to go to Erie for a quick one day trip but if the roads are bad there is no way I’m taking Lushie and our precious load out in any potential harm. If the job thing wasn’t stressful enough, we now have the holidays and all the lovely family drama that comes with it. (reasons why I’m not fond of the holidays coming soon)

Who am i kidding, I could really go for a week in St Lucia.

Recycle FAIL

December 7th, 2008 5 comments

If you can’t see that, it reads “This label will biodegrade over time, but this container will not. Next time please consider china and reusable service ware when dining with us.”

A few things about this.

  1. I never asked for this container. The person working gave it to me. I wasn’t aware of options.
  2. When I asked a cashier about it she said I could get dining plates and leave them in my kitchen area.
  3. I don’t have a kitchen area at my job. It was ripped out and my “kitchen” is in the mail room.
  4. China? in a cafeteria? seriously?

Breaking up is hard to do

November 23rd, 2008 4 comments

I want to thank all of you for your support since last Thursday. It has truly made a difference in getting through these last few rough days.

For those who haven’t heard I’m one of the Ericsson 250 at the Warrendale office who found out last Thursday that our location is being shut down. I can’t go into details that haven’t already reported in the media but by the end of 2009 the business which started out as FORE Systems will be no more. Once my last day has passed (TBD) I’ll think about a recap of my last 10 years.

Articles about the closing

(Pgh Business Times)
Ericsson to close Marshall plant; 250 jobs affected
(Tribune Review)

Lushie and I have had many long conversations this weekend about what we’re going to do. I’ve been working on my resume and started searching job sites so please stop asking me. Most know that I refuse to sit on my couch like an unemployed slug so I will be keeping myself busy. Along with my schoolwork (this layoff will not stop me from getting my degree) I’m going to spend time finishing up Studio B, focusing on my writing, revamping a few sites I run and spend more time expanding my food appreciation.

Now for the question I’ve been asked most, “What about the podcast?”. Sickpuppy and I met shortly after the announcement and agreed that we’re going full steam ahead. Coming off another finalist honor at the Podcast Awards we owe it to our fans to keep on recording. In fact there may be more SIDT productions than we expected. We got together last night over many beers to discuss the direction of this show and lets just say it will be one fun ride.

So anyone out there looking for a new media/social networking/web producer/web manager/multimedia specialist guy shoot me a message :)   I’m also entertaining craft beer sales.

Short work week ahead which will be comforting even with all the drama that is a family holiday to close it out. There is a beacon of light through all of this which I’ll share shortly.

cheers!
