I posted on Twitter that I was going to eat one of these bad boys. The reactions were pretty solid.

FunkyDung: Shhhh…You don’t want the FDA’s food gestapo to hear you!!!
jayesel: I can’t believe you bought one! Your arteries are crying out for mercy :)
ScareHouseScott: Witnesses on the scene of a man’s fatal coronary say his final words were “holy crap is it salty.” Live coverage tonight at 5
TwinmamaTeb: I can hear your arteries crying from here

Here are the nutritional facts and info from the KFC Double Down website:

“The new KFC Double Down sandwich is real! This one-of-a-kind sandwich features two thick and juicy boneless white meat chicken filets (Original Recipe® or Grilled), two pieces of bacon, two melted slices of Monterey Jack and pepper jack cheese and Colonel’s Sauce. This product is so meaty, there’s no room for a bun! “

Sandwich Calories Fat (g) Sodium (mg)
KFC Original Recipe® Double Down 540 32 1380
KFC Grilled Double Down 460 23 1430

For some reason everyone fears this meal so I figured “eh, why not?”. People, let me break this down easy for you. It’s 2 thin chicken fillets with light portion of bacon, slice of cheese and some sauce. It is better than most things on the KFC menu or in fact most fast food items. Because of its packaging and marketing everyone things this is a death meal when in fact its just a salty gooey mess… wait, that sounds bad doesn’t it.

Anyways take a look at the KFC Nutritional Guide (pdf) and look at the sodium and calories in most of those single items. You order a 2-3 piece meal and you’re already beating out the Double Down.

My Thoughts
Overpriced for the meal. It was very salty, little bacon and the cheese was chewy. I ordered the Original Recipe and thought the chicken was cooked perfect; mildly juice and not dry. Skin and breading was crunchy and a little peppery but again the salt started to ruin it.

I’ve found that each KFC in the Pittsburgh area is different. You never get the same tasting chicken (honestly most are WAY off) and the service is generally bad but the one in Moon Township was a beacon for customer service and a pleasant ordering experience. Whenever I get my KFC shakes I may have to go back, unfortunately it’ll be cold by the time I get it home for the fam.

I agree that there are likely much, much worse foods on the majority of the fast-food menus out there … it’s just that this sandwich, not unlike KFC’s meal-bowls that they unleashed last year, sounds like something that would come from the imagination of Homer Simpson. And that makes it uniquely American.

There is a Hardees in Millvale, which I pass multiple times a week, and just about everything on that menu is slathered in pure greasy goodness and infused with artery-crushing evil. Care to try the “Six Dollar Grilled Cheese Bacon Thickburger?” It has…and I swear I’m not kidding… 80 GRAMS OF FAT. http://www.hardees.com/menu/

I have to admit that I love the bowls. I actually eat that way (mixing everything in with taters) so I was a big fan of them.

I can see what you mean about the Homer idea. Now see if you sold that and said that it was between 2 pieces of bread no one would care. This was great marketing on their part. Only downside was that the wrapper they put it in, the cheese stuck to it so when I tried to take it off the paper came with.

If this came as Extra Crispy I’d have died by now from glee

You know it’s kind of amazing how terrible the KFC service is. It’s definitely not just management at one store… I’ve had EXCRUCIATING experiences at KFC’s here in SoCal (let’s talk about an HOUR wait for a family dinner – by some grace of God I was patient – too patient probably…)

Now when we get a hankering for fried chicken we find as many other options as possible so we can avoid KFC.

I have yet to find a decent place outside of KFC that has good fried chicken in Pittsburgh.

There aren’t many KFC’s in our area so to go to one is a trip. The store in Bellevue ALWAYS gets the order wrong. I lived there for 5 years and even now when I drive through they still screw the orders up. Lushie once saw people come up and try to get more food for free because they said they were “entitled to it” because they weren’t full.

Then there is the one on McKnight Road in Ross TWP/Wexford that is a huge joke. It’s a KFC/Taco Bell combo. The workers there are always rude. They always screw up orders and the last time I went there took 20 minutes for my food and no one else was in line. They were too busy talking. When I did get my order the worker laughed at me and walked away.

What sucks is that when I do have that KFC bug, if I’m not at work I have to drive 40 minutes to Moon to get it. That wont stay warm the drive home.
