French Onion Soup is crack

I’m addicted to french onion soup. Next to a quality sandwich if you can wow me with french onion soup you’ll have me as a customer for life. I dont know what it is about this specific soup that I crave so much. First off you have to nail presentation. If the cheese isn’t melted over like the above picture I took today at Fat Heads you should just give up. Next up is the cheese itself. I’ve been to places that use sliced swiss and it was disgusting. Me, I’m a provolone, Fontina or Gruyere cheese kinda guy.

Now the bread. Fat Heads used chunks which I wasn’t stellar on the idea but served well. personally I dig country style bread. It does a great job absorbing the flavor of the broth and doesn’t turn into a soggy mess. It retains its consistency.

Have a favorite soup or your own version of French Onion? Let me know in the comments section.

cheers!

Onions are often not friends with my heartburn, but I cannot turn down a good serving of French Onion Soup. After the pic you posted, I think I’m going to have to make a trip to Fat Heads just for it!!

I love That Thing You Do. I’ve watched it ever since I was a kid.

Great sports blog man! I have two myself. I was thinking that maybe we could do a link exchange so that we can spread some traffic around to each other.

      Let me know.

The WInchester Room in North Versailles has tremendous french onion soup. They go old school — it’s in the crock, with copious amounts of cheese spilling down the sides.

That, a good salad, and a thick steak is a pretty damn good meal in my book.

      Seconded on the Winchester Room.

When I lived in New Jersey there was a resturant in Smithville called Fred and Ethyls. They had the best french onion soup ever. I have not been there since 1998 but it’s on my list of places to stop when I go visit. I hope it’s as good as I remember.

At about the same time you were posting this, I was serving up the French onion soup that I spent all day making. I love making it myself, because I can make it exactly how I like it.

Sounds like I need to try the Winchester Room. That’s a bit of a hike to North Versailles but if the soups good it’d be worth it!

Gina, do you use any alcohol in yours? I’ve been reading online where ppl use cognac.

Despite the sad presentation I like the ability to get French Onion Soup at Panera Bread. The locations are convenient and I order it in a bread bowl which makes for a delicious treat when the soup is finished… but it definitely needs more cheese, especially when it’s to go.

Funny you mention that Adri, I’ve heard from a lot of ppl over email that I need to check out Panaera for the soup. Of course i’ll listen to you before i listen to them *haha*

You know, I have to admit I’ve never tried it. The only reason is that I pretty much love Wedding Soup and Pasta Fagiole and they are on the menu at most places I go. I am making a concerted effort to order French Onion Soup this weekend….will recomment
