Pumpkin farmin n’at

October 25th, 2009 douglas 4 comments

Saturday had us shopping for a pumpkin. It was Teaspoon’s first time at a farm and when he saw the tractor he let out a loud “WHOA!”

The whole album of the day can be found here.

This is one of the many things I love about Pittsburgh. We’re a big city but yet also can drive 20 minutes and be in some beautiful farmland. This was taken at Soergel’s in Wexford. Teaspoon had a good day farming before heading to his first ever rugby match to watch his girlfriend Claire play. More later on that…

Check your facts – Mad Anthony Wayne edition

October 24th, 2009 douglas 4 comments

Sometimes trivial things piss me off but when you’re writing an article for a major newspaper such as the Pittsburgh Post Gazette I’d think that some things would be checked if your story is front page news.

Case in point…

As I opened the paper this morning I saw a story on Mad Anthony Wayne and how today is the 200th anniversary of his burial in Chester County. If you’re from Erie you know his story and most likely touched the kettle his body was boiled in which still is on display at the Erie Historical Museum. Anyway, the article states “his body rested for 12 years in an oak coffin at Presque Isle, a peninsula off Lake Erie”. It SHOULD read “his body rested for 12 years in an oak coffin at the flagpole next to Wayne Blockhouse.” Don’t believe me? click here to listen to the mp3 from the Erie Historical Society.

If you’re not from Erie or are not familiar with the area let me Google Map this bad boy for you with “A” marking the FORT Presque Isle’s location.

fortp_presqueisle

A little father to the right of the A is the Blockhouse which can still be visited. As you can see these are different locations. In fact there is a big ass body of water separating the 2. Most people would probably say “eh quit nit picking” but honestly this is a careless error. It took me less than 2 minutes on Google to double check stories. Now if the argument was to be made, which it shouldn’t but we’ll say it is, that the area itself was named “Presque Isle” but then that would have been noted.

If his body wasn’t boiled I bet Anthony’s ass would be chapped over this blunder.

Pittsburgh Google Maps: REVISITED

October 20th, 2009 douglas 3 comments

The topic came up today that Google Maps is filled with its share of flaws when it comes to updating or accurately place marking certain locations (Seriously, you don’t recognize Cranberry Township yet? wtf). Its a free app that really does some wonderful things and every once in awhile we like to pick on it. Last year I posted about one BIG problem where the mapping system was showing you going the wrong way through the Liberty Tunnel. Jami posted a comment today asking if there was ever an update so I took a look. Here we go…

Start: Cranberry Township, PA
End: Mount Oliver, PA

googlemaps01
1) OK I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt here but you know some dumbass is going to soar into those trees. Good thing that’s UPMC over there. Instant treatment.

googlemaps02
2) While this may look odd to you there are actually a lot of people who do this. Most locals know better unless they’re in their SUV, applying make up, eating a sammich, talking on 2 cell phones while texting on another, smoking a cigarette and filming a low budget porn all while driving.

googlemaps03
3) wtf? Its says Merge ONTO 579 not INTO 579

googlemaps04
4) WOOHOO! SUCCESS! It’s fixed!

googlemaps05
5) Scratch that…

At least they’re not telling you to switch lanes in the tunnel. Yeah, you don’t wanna do that. Bad idea.

Fantasy Football update: bucket of suck

October 19th, 2009 douglas No comments

fantasyfootball09W6

I love fantasy football with my friends because I talk a lot of smack. I won’t lie. The fact that I really don’t know wtf I’m doing makes it even more fun. I’ve said it before, I know stats so my draft usually sucks but I pick up a lot in free agency, trades and watching trends. This year has been rather good to me but yesterday the bottom dropped out and people are catching up. Here’s where we’re at so far with this week’s downfall.

Yinz Team: Capt. Geech (4-2) – I lost to Pitt Girl (Skippy’s Sluts) yesterday and Jeff Reed celebrated by getting arrested for being a drunken mess again. I’m not making excuses even though my top QB and RB were on BYE weeks and Willie Parker still has alien toe but I shall take the loss gracefully since she can only beat me when I field replacements :)  See you in the playoffs sweetheart!

Hop Heads Anonymous 2: Utensils (3-3) - Tom Brady, I hate you. Seriously, go play in traffic. In this league he racked up 84 points last night and I lost in the greatest landslide of our league 195-104 to Irish Car Bomb.

RMU Pick’m: CaptGeecj&ShrimpShackShooters (62 points) - This is a league where you pick the winners each week. I currently have a 2 point lead over ShruteFarms which was once 4. Philly and the Jets really biffed up my selections by blowing their games. Chicago, why did I even bother.

Yinz Team Pick’m: fatherspoon (61 points) - Another pick’m like previous but in this league i’m currently 4th. Previously I was 2nd and 1st. Every week this changes and the same results as above. I don’t mind seeing Uncle Crappy in the top slot since he’s a Browns fan and with Ohio State losing this weekend also I think he needs the good news.

Romo, Gore and Parker will all be back and healthy next week and I play Papuga. Bring it on lil lady!

Podcamp Pittsburgh 4 – the recap

October 17th, 2009 douglas No comments

creationrex

That’s Creation Rex. He sits outside the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and attended Podcamp Pittsburgh 4. Where were you?

Once again this gathering of social media minds was a huge success and for the first time ever the event was sold out! How do you sell out a free event? Easy, you can only fit so many people into one area :)

You’re probably going to ready many many many recaps of the weekend so here’s my short short version.

Meet n Greet
serving beer
Erie Brewing was the beer sponsor with myself, sickpuppy and Paradox as your lovely bartenders. Beers for the evening were:

10.5 cases of beer and a case of wine was kicked in 2.5 hours. Attendance was packed but enough room to breathe. After Party was Jekyl and Hyde where Dox fell into a DFH120 coma and did shots of  Crystal Head Vodka with sickpuppy. Sometime around 12am we made it back to the hotel.

Day 1 – Podcamp sold out at 500 people. (VIP’s and free guests)
11am – Grassroots Podcasting
This is the session that has become a staple of Podcamp Pittsburgh. Hosted by Should I Drink That and the Wrestling Mayhem Show, the premise of the talk is to discuss inexpensive ways to start and then promote your podcast. Oh yeah, and people get chopped, chopped, chopped and chopped. The tradition continued of another packed room of people with fantastic audience interaction. A few questions came up about how to make money doing what we do. And while some left as soon as we said this is a hobby (that’s right biatches, I saw you get up and bolt. you were there to find out how to get rich quick and leave. We heard you were floating through groups. Next time we chase you with a chair.), we saw the glow in the eyes of our people when new ideas were presented. I have to give Sorg a lot of credit he really knows how to promote and market a show. When he speaks you need to listen.

The plus side for myself and sickpuppy was the new business opportunities which arose from the talk for us. I decided to let it out that SIDT is expanding and well… you’ll have to wait. We’re gonna redefine media whores :)

Papuga Porch
This is the smokers lounge aka, porch outside AIP cafeteria. We have renamed this in honor of the great Dawn Papuga who was unable to attend this year because her pussy was hurt. Serious, her cat was in the ER.

1pm – Yinz Cam
Priya Narasimhan was on hand to present quite possibly the greatest sports app developed and it was created here in Pittsburgh. Yinz Cam will allow your cell phone the ability to watch replays, different camera angles and see things that not even the TV’s will show you all for FREE on your phone. Currently this technology is available in the Mellon Arena for Pens. I have seen it used and its hella cool. Also talked about was the iBurgh app (also free) which allows you to complain to the city electronically.  Have a pothole that needs fixed? Take a pic with your phone and send it to the city. The built in GPS of your phone will help tag the exact location. Yinz Cam/iBurgh are prime examples as to why Pittsburgh is a leader in technology and “e-democracy”.

2pm -  “We do a radio show… but not really.”
Mikey and Big Bob from the 96.1fm Freakshow hosted what turned out to be the funniest session of the day. I’ve hated Pittsburgh morning radio, that’s why I got XM, but from talking to these guys online and seeing how they’ve taken to social media I’m now a faithful listener. They showed 3 of their videos and what seemed like 45 minutes of self promo turned into a kickass education on how local media needs to accept and embrace the future. Through social media they’ve been able to create and host events that would never have been possible with the traditional phone calls and announcing on air. Its about instant media, feedback and reaching as many as possible in the shortest amount of time and cost.

3pm -Shutting down your blog “A case study of the Burgh Blog”
I wasn’t really sure what to expect from this session going in. Most Pittsburgh bloggers and social media folk have been friends for awhile so we knew parts of the story and I had talked to Ginny a few times but never knew exactly what was involved with closing down the most popular blog in Pittsburgh history. Jaw dropping is cliche but true. Hearing how well executed Woy and Ginny did this was not just amazing but genius. This is a session you need to watch for yourself and watch you can do, soon.

Podcamp Pittsburgh broadcasted every session live thanks to the team at Vivo and will shortly be available online for you to watch. That’s right, you can watch Podcamp if you weren’t able to make it!

Day 1 After Party
Went to Red Star. Food was decent, beer was OK (best on tap was Sam Adams Oktoberfest) but Chris from Bocktown saved that and brought some growlers for us to drink (Weyerbacher Blithering Idiot infused with dates and other glorious flavors) and did the now traditional 649 shot which that night it was Tequila, Vodka and Razzmatazz.

YouTube Preview Image
(thanks to DahCheet)

Left there for Jekyl and Hyde where we stayed the rest of the night and closed the place. Drank many DFH120, Victory Wild Devil and, per sickpuppy’s request, all did multiple flaming Dr Peppers. Couldn’t find a taxi so the 3 of us had to walk from south side, across a river, through a tunnel and go downtown to our hotel. Stopped at Holiday Inn Express on South Side to use the bathroom, crashed a bachelorette party, told the desk clerk that we were staying there (we weren’t) so we got a shuttle back to the Marriott downtown. Dox went to sleep so sickpuppy and I took a 6 pack down to the front lobby and hung out outside. I think it was around 4am by the time we got back to the room.

Day 2
doug_glare
Got to Podcamp around 11:30am, just in time for free lunch. Stayed for 2 sessions and went home. We might have been a LITTLE tired.

So where can you catch all of the excitement online in pics and video? Easy, search your favorite sites for the tag #pcpgh4 or:

Thanks for a great weekend everyone now take a couple weeks off then we can start planning Podcamp Pittsburgh 5!

Boston over Pittsburgh in 2010? Start laughing now based on her logic.

October 14th, 2009 douglas 15 comments

Skyline of Pittsburgh

This is in reply to a piece that Jessica Isner wrote titled “Top 10 Reasons Boston Will Dethrone Pittsburgh as Best Sports City in 2010“. Lets address each of her claims as to why Boston will win.

10. Pittsburgh has no MLS team and no NBA team.
Didn’t realize people actually followed MLS and NBA teams still. That’s SO 90′s. We’ve been too busy to notice down here, you know, winning hockey and football titles. Honestly, if not for ESPN would anyone even know the NBA was around? My bet is that if you throw a bunch of “pro” teams at a city eventually one of them will win.

9. The Penguins may be better than the Bruins, but…
But nothing. Penguins are 5-1, Bruins are  2-3.  No Stanley Cup since 1971-72? Wow that’s almost as pathetic as Toronto. suck it.

8. The Charles River trumps all three rivers in Pittsburgh.
Here’s the part that kills me, “The Charles has history, collegiate regattas and celebrity fans.”. Darlin, you may want to check out the Three Rivers Regatta and Head of the Ohio. Since you’re up on history I’m assuming you know about Fort Pitt? right? What a joke. Did you even fact check?

7. Pittsburgh doesn’t have cool celebrity fans.
What does this have to do with best Sports City? Oh well I’ll humor it. If you could fill your seats on your own you wouldn’t need celebs. That’s why we have waiting lists to get into our games.

6. Sam Adams > Iron City.
Iron City? Really? I like Sam and all but I think you need to have a few beers from East End Brewing. You’ll find the emerging craft beer scene here quite impressive. Take off the beer goggles.

5. Boston is a college hockey utopia.
Granted you have a GREAT hockey program up there but you should check your facts. True that Pitt doesn’t have a  Div 1 hockey team but Robert Morris does and look at the score sheet of the last time they played.

4. After much debate, it’s true: BC football is better than Pitt football.
Debate with whom? the mailroom guy?

3. Fan devotion
Steeler Nation would destroy you and Penguins fans would trample your weak and hurdle your dead Bruins fans. no contest.

2. Speaking of the Patriots and the Steelers …
Yeah speaking of, I forget, which city does your football team play in again? Ours is actually IN Pittsburgh so I was just curious.

1. This is a baseball country, and — shocker — the Pirates just don’t cut it.
Its whatever country you want it to be when you’re trying to grasp for hope. Pirates have lost for 17 straight years and the only person this seems like news to is you. Seriously, we don’t even notice anymore.

Stanley Cup Celebration FAIL

October 3rd, 2009 douglas 6 comments

5 hours. That was the wait to get your picture with the Stanley Cup today if you are a ticket holder. I had every intention of waiting in like with Teaspoon but when I arrived and the line was reaching the Marriott I knew it wasn’t going to happen.

The problem was that it was a “suggested” time and not a hard time so anyone scheduled on Saturday could show up. I called on Friday to double check my time and was told ‘Well really you can show up whenever. Its just a suggested time to help move things along.” Know what happens when you give options like that, knuckleheads muck it up. You now how many fans you have coming based on the tickets you sent out, so give them a time to be there and if you can’t make that window, oh well. Yeah it’s harsh but so is waiting 5 freaking hours. CYS would have arrested me if I stood there with 7mo old Teaspoon that long.

This wasn’t the only problem over the last 24 hours for the celebration for me. Now don’t get me wrong, I’m 110% in support of the Pens but some things last night at the game chapped my ass.

1) No forks – Pizza Hut stand in E Balcony North informed me as they handed me a heaping serving of Monster Chicken Nachos that they no longer offer forks. I thought it was a joke at first but the workers informed me that they were no longer provided forks. People, this is a pile of acid reflux hell that gets the chips all soft from the cheese plus its piled high with chicken. YOU NEED A FORK! I thank the ladies for running to find me a fork but whomever runs that stand needs to get their heads out of someone’s ass.

2) No Banner – Probably the sweetest thing I have ever received as a giveaway came last night in the form of a mini-version of the banner that was raised last night. Right away I thought this would be a great addition to Teaspoon’s room. Midway through the 2nd period I realized that my banner was gone. I leaned it against the railing in front of me (in F balcony the railing goes to the floor) along with my program. Some magic being came down and took it. I asked the guys in front of me and they claimed they only had their banner. The woman next to me said she didn’t have it. Well someone does and it isn’t me. If you took it on purpose, you suck and I hope you headbutt a train.

3) Soggy Program – to highlight the night my program was ruined. The lady who sat next to me arrived and threw down soaking wet sweatshirts on top of my program. It wasn’t until I looked for my banner that I realized what she did. All she could say was “well they were wet.”

So in the last 24 hours I had forkless nachos, a soggy program, a banner stolen and unable to see the Stanley Cup.

Never fear the FAIL, I have the WIN coming up next. Pulling the video off my camera now!
