You’re Doing It Wrong – Bobby Flay on Twitter

bobbyflaytwitter

Bobby Flay (@bflay) is one of the few TV celebs that when I hear the name I grin and say “he dah man”. Whenever his shows are on TV I watch them and I also credit him with saving Food Network back in the day (although now Next Food Network Star is a mess). Bobby can cook, there is no doubt about that. He can play baseball and looks like he makes a mean drink. Basically he’s the guy you want to hang out with when the wife is out of town and eat like a rockstar.

One thing Bobby can’t do though is Twitter. Now we’re in an age that names are hijacked or spoofed on a regular basis but when someone such as Mashable links to it, I tend to believe in the validity. At the time I type this Bobby has 21,654 followers and following ZERO. That’s right nada. Not even his wife or a friend. Not even Food Network! This leads me to believe that either its not Bobby (he seems more tech savvy than Paula Deen and she’s following 64), its a really bad dummy account or some PR person doesn’t give a shit and made it because it came up at a weekly meeting. He doesn’t even have more than a standard background.

Bobby, if this is you, it’s about communication and your tweets suck. There I said it. THEY SUCK! This is a great way to talk to your fans and you’re failing. Take a Saturday and learn what it is you are doing here. Snap some pics with your phone and post it. Let us know what’s on your mind and ask us for opinions. Heck you can even have a ghost twitter and make your assistant or an intern answer it. Just give us something besides “another Iron Chef taping”.

Bobby… you’re doing it wrong

I don’t come to Bobby Flay’s defense often, because . . . well, he continues to sleep with the enemy. But I must come to his defense this time.

I think it’s a freakin’ miracle that Flay is on Twitter at all. Do you know how many irons this guy has in the fire? He has multiple restaurants to manage, cookbooks to design, and I don’t even know how many TV shows he’s on now. Add to that his weekly segment on Good Morning America, and the various other appearances he makes, and I wonder how the man has time to sleep, let alone Twitter.

The fact that he’s following zero is actually a good thing. He’s a straight shooter. Do you know how many chefs and restaurants follow me on Twitter? Quite a few. So I follow them back. Do you know how many actually tweet me? None. The idea is to get people to follow you, so you can market yourself. They have no intention of corresponding with anyone. Who has time for that?

Twitter is becoming almost like a journal for people – so their fans know what’s going on. I was shocked to actually see Lance Armstrong tweet people back during the TDF. I think it was amazing that he took the time. But if he didn’t, I wouldn’t have thought differently of him for it.

Trust me, it hurt me to single him out like this because I love what he’s done and has been a huge part of why I grill and BBQ but I had to do it for this subject matter.

Case in point he doesn’t get it. On August 1st he tweeted “BBP August Burger of Month starts today..Carolina burger (smoked cheddar, mustard BBQ sauce, green onion slaw), let me know what you think” How would he know what we think? He’s not following anyone so you can’t DM him and looking at his entire history he’s never talked to ANYONE. If you want a journal then fine, use your blog.

You’re a celebrity, you have expectations by fan when you go onto a public site like this. If he’s too busy then he shouldn’t do it or have an assistant at least make the page look like an effort was put into it. Someone of his stature shouldn’t half ass it. The problem is we don’t know if it is him or not. As much as they bug me, at least the Neely’s are working on a conversation http://twitter.com/the_neelys

Phil, its OK to admit you follow Paula too.
