Where were you when Sid slid?

The day Pirates fans will always remember as  the start of the downward spiral that is professional baseball in Pittsburgh today. It was at that moment which Sid Bream, who had 2 broken legs, a heart monitor and was on crutches, ran from second base on a Francisco Cabrera single and beat out a rainbow throw from Barry Bonds to Mike LaValliere sparking a 3 run 9th inning comeback to send the Braves to the 1992 World Series. To this day he is known as Sid “f*cking” Bream.

Pirate fans have never forgiven Barry for the play and in a few short months would jump ship for San Francisco where he remains today.  The Pirates haven’t had a winning season since.

Joe Starkey was the only reporter who bothered to recognize this anniversary and did so with an excellent article which you can read here.  I remember where I was and I remember my brother, who then worked for the team,  calling and uttering the words “what the hell just happened?”

I was a newlywed…living in a dump of a trailer….with an infant son…and as luck would have it, me and the new Mrs. had had one of those infamous newlywed spats/fights/arguments over something trivial and she had gone to bed. i was shooting baskets with my nerf ball and hoop as the ‘rats entered the the bottom of the ninth, up 2-0 three outs away from the W
World Series, thinking oh boy…is she gonna be pissed she missed this.” Then the bottom fell out. i remember when cabrera laced that long foul….and thought “UH_OH. At least its the hobbled up bream who represented the winning run I’m thinking…. then next pitch….nerf is forgotten…..and i’m screaming so loud the pissed off new Mrs. comes running from the bedroom to tell me to shut up. I never heard her…….. i still see despondent Andy Van Slyke sitting dumbstruck in the outfield. And yes, I am still married…maybe thats the curse….hmmmmmmm

I grew up a Braves fan. When this happened I was living east of Atlanta and going to college. I was actually scoring at home, but couldn’t stand it and had to stop scoring after Gant came up to bat. People took to the street to celebrate all over the Southeast. Horns honking, yelling and screaming, beer…it was so great. I still get chills thinking about it.

I still have the game recorded on VHS and I have the audio mp3 too. Both calls (Sean McDonough and Skip Carey) were great!

As many goats as we could have found in that game all of the blame has been put on Bonds. It was the final kiss of death for what would become 18 consecutive losing seasons.

Pirates fired their manager yesterday and unless the economy of baseball changes we’ll be seeing 20 seasons real soon.

You’re just jealous because the Pirates got the worst record in baseball this year. We actually made it to the playoffs!

Are you serious? Dude we haven’t won on 18 YEARS! I’m jealous of everyone who finishes above .500!
