Being a Dick can win you $500,000

I’ve been trying to hold off on talking about the ending of Big Brother 8 but figured that enough time has passed (about a week) that people have forgotten about him already.

Well I have to say that out of the 2 left I’m glad to see that Dick won. I figured 1 of 2 things would happen. Everyone would give Danielle the win because Dick was, well a dick or Dick would win because no one liked Danielle’s whining backstabbing ways. When it came down to it Dick played a better game and that’s what this was all about. Dick was himself. He didn’t need friends (thought having his daughter helped). Of the 3 remaining I wanted to see Zach because I was tired of Dick’s little crackbaby romps around the house when in fact Zack could snap him like a twig. Oh well, Julie Chen has to go back to a real job I guess doing whatever it is she does on CBS.

Apparently there is a myspace page for him but who knows what’s real on that abortion of a site. Evel Dick’s MySpace Page. What I think is even funnier is that Danielle’s reported page isn’t linked in the friends section.

Either way the season is over. No more Amber crying. No more of Jen sucking the intelligence out of this country. No more Danielle of Danielle’s nice bod but guuuuuyyyyys coome ooonnnn voice. No more Eric screwing around with everyone and for the love of God no more Dick.

Drive a BMW and you can say “I AM THE LAW!”

bmw_noparking.jpg

I swear to God that besides a couple people I know, everyone else behind the wheel of a Beemer is completely oblivious to reality. Even more like the Smug episode of South Park.
This gem was taken as I drove by the Warrendale Park n Ride off Brush Creek Road this morning. It’s not the first time this person has parked like this which is why I stopped because you know… if there should be one mark on the car the owner will be the first to say “oh geeze… i don’t know why I was hit.”

I don’t want to limit this to BMW drivers though. I’ve noticed that anyone in a sports car or SUV who drives in Cranberry is a tool also. I should have taken a picture of the lady yesterday who didn’t know how to park her big ass Expedition at GetGo so she took up the entire side of the pumps. Personally I think SUVs and trucks over a certain length/height should have their own designated parking area but that’s a whole ‘nother post.

The girls dating the guys who can’t quite make the team. Watch the video to find out more.

That is a video I chopped up from the Post Gazette website of an interview Stoosh and I gave following the Pens Town Hall Meeting last night. This is what I love about the Penguins organization, they’re very passionate about thanking their fans. The publicly recognize us as the reason for the team staying where it is. They treat us season ticket holders like champs and I have to say thanks. You will never see any other pro sports team in this city show the gratitude to it’s fans.  I have tickets to tomorrow night’s pre-season game vs Det.  It’s time to start geekin out about hockey!

Steel City Big Pour – Best Beer Fest EVER

September 20th, 2007 douglas 2 comments

big_pour.jpg

Oh damn I’ve been waiting to blog about this. My week has been swamped since I finish up classes for this semester on Saturday. Enough excuses, time for the review!

Another reason why I had waited on this is due to the fact we had to finish up editing EP26 Steel City Big Pour for release yesterday. I swear every show there is more and more work to do online. I don’t mind as long as you keep on listening :)

First off I want to say that of all of the beerfests I’ve been to in my day this one was… *AHEM* THE BEST ONE EVER! Yes, I have no problem slapping that label on it. I’m confident. The people at Construction Junction did an absolutely fantastic job of throwing this event. Unlike other beer events I’ve attended this one wasn’t boring aesthetically. Vibrant colors, amazing decorated kegerators, live band that wasn’t old men playing drinking songs, various food booths set up by local vendors, live art being created out of scrap metal. The warehouse wasn’t crammed and was perfectly vented unlike previous elbow to elbow events around town. Honestly, if you come up and ask me about this I’ll rave for hours.

Now for the beer. What you think I’m REALLY going to talk about it? Listen to the damn show you slacker! I will say this, I did have my favorite Pittsburgh beer. I did not have one bad beer. I met some great people and SIDT was interviewed by Mike Pound, The Beer Guy, from Go Magazine which should hit shelves in early October. Want an autographed copy? Heh yeah, doesn’t everyone :)   Just find me at the bar and bring a sharpie. I’ll even draw for you.  Mike was a very cool guy and I can see all of us sharing more fine craft beverages in the future.

Bowling league started last night and hopefully i can keep up the pace. I’ve always been an average bowler.  I don’t put spin or anything fancy on it, I just throw the ball.  I have aim and know the arrows but that’s it.  Last night I rolled 151 / 131 /161 and we won 2 of the 3 games.  It got me thinking about actually getting a decent ball and learning more about the sport. Originally we went to hang out with friends since this is usually the night that we all have some free time. We have plenty of very talented bowlers in our league that I’m sure would be able to help me out.  I should also have pictures from our banquet in the next couple weeks.

Speaking of pictures, The Steel City Big Pour was a HUGE success yesterday.  I should have pictures/videos and a review in the next day or so.  Not only was it huge for the community but my podcast was given a HUGE boost.  We’ll be in print the first week of October. Details to follow…

Post Gazette drops the ball on BACN

September 13th, 2007 douglas No comments

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07256/817051-28.stm

In today’s Post Gazette Tim Grant writes about BACN. Needless to say I did a better job than this guy. It was coined IN PITTSBURGH! Do you think he interviewed anyone remotely involved with it? Hell naw. Marketing experts and random folk everywhere but HERE! This is a prime example as to why I don’t read the PG anymore. The reporting is oblivious to anything local unless someone slaps them in the head with a brick and shouts “Hey! over here!”

Really PG, I expected more out of you. Maybe that was the problem to start with.

**UPDATE 3:33pm EST **
I love my blog. I got to vent like I did above and got it out of my system. I wrote Tim an email after I chilled out and voiced my displeasure with the exclusion of Pittsburghers in the article and also offered him the opportunity to talk to those of us new media creators and find out more about what it is we do and why Pittsburgh is one of the most popular cities in this country for it.

**UPDATE 4:15pm EST**
Tim replied…

Douglas — I can certainly appreciate your disappointment in not seeing local quotes on a worldwide story that originated right here. For that, I apologize. But understand that I was working with limited space to write an article explaining this new term to a general newspaper audience. We did mention that the term Bacn originated at The Pittsburgh Art Institute. But any more detail would have veered the story off course and put me over my space limit. I hope to readdress the issue in more detail in the future. But thanks for your input and for taking the time to consider my response. Tim

Staff Writer

**UPDATE**
Tim, you completely missed my point.  Your story was more about SPAM and identity theft. You used BACN but have no idea what it’s about. You found a buzz word and ran with it. Any of those other sources from other cities could have been removed. Ya dropped the ball buddy. Thanks for giving Pittsburgh the support *smirk*

Saturday on the South Side

September 9th, 2007 douglas 3 comments

bar1311.jpg

Saturday was a long day. My original plan was to meet up with sickpuppy for lunch, come home for a few hours and then head to PNC Park to meet up with Griff and Emerson for the Pirates game. So much for plans!

Lunch was at the Double Wide Grill on the South Side. The place reminds me of a smaller Quaker steak but with a better beer selection. The food was OK but overpriced for the quality. The beer selection was decent but the prices were favorable. Bartenders were pretty cool but the highlight was this college aged American Eagle reject guy. He came in and wanted beer to go. The bartender said there were growlers available but if he wants a 6pk to go 2 blocks down. This dumbass orders a growler of Miller Light for $16! Not only an insult to the growler but just plain friggin stupid. 2 blocks down and he would have had a cheap 6pk of Miller.

Instead of heading home I was talked into visiting bar 1311 which is… at 1311 Carson St. I’ve been to my fair share of bars on the South Side and I can say that by the time I left a few hours later that this is one of my favorite bars. What i liked – GREAT craft beer selection at a reasonable price. VERY VERY clean. I mean clean to the point that the bathrooms are cleaner than some hospitals. Staff was very knowledgeable and friendly. Overall this was a fun place to be with a multitude of LCD TVs and a projection screen. I also came away with a 1311 Work Shirt as a gift. Apparently they’ve heard our show and had good things to say. Oh yeah, Plus they would love to have us record there.

I left 1311 around 5:30 so that I could make it to PNC Park in time to meet up with Griff and Emerson. It was around 95F when we entered the park and enjoyed a night at the park up behind home plate. It’s always a good time when I get to hang out with those guys even if we were sweating our asses off. I know that I’ve said I wouldn’t pay for another ticket and honestly I stayed true to my word… these were freebies :)   BTW, Pirates lost 5-1.

Red Star Brewery

September 8th, 2007 douglas No comments

Yesterday I had business in Greensburg to take care of. I knew that I would be finished around dinnertime so I hit Twitter asking if anyone had suggestions for a place to go. Most of them knowing my love of craft beer directed me to Red Star Brewery in Greensburg. First of all this place was a bitch to get to. No one in the blessed town could give me directions that didn’t involve an old landmark or someone’s house.

From first appearance this place looked incredible. The brewery is in an old train station erected in 1910. There are historical pictures outside of the building back then and nothing has honestly changed… well besides the fact there is a brewery there now. I made it in around 4pm and took a seat at the bar. Forgetting that it was Friday I couldn’t figure out why there were only a few people there. Dave, the bartender, was very knowledgeable about the beers they brew and showed me the sampler they serve. I couldn’t resist so I ordered one. Here are the beverages I sampled. I’m not going to give you a full review because I’m saving that for a future podcast. Road trippin seems to be our thing now.

1) Quench: American Wheat (4.1 ABV)
2) Munich Helles: Light Beer, German Style (5.6 ABV)
3) Hefeweizen (5.4 ABV)
4) Golden Strawberry Ale (4.7 ABV)
5) Lambic Framboise (4.7 ABV)
6) Harbortown Ale: English Pale Ale ( 4.4 ABV)
7) Canvasback: APA (5.2 ABV)
8) Derailed: Imperial Stout (8.8 ABV)

Now the food. The menu is pricey so come with a few more dollars than you would to say, Fat Heads. The quality of food though was absolutely worth it! I started with BBQ peppers. After Dave told me what was in them I had to swear that it didn’t leave the restaurant. I can say it is wrapped in bacon and is covered in cheese. The stuffing is the delicious mystery. For an entree I ordered the Brewer’s Burger. Half-pound burger cooked to your specifications, glazed with bbq sauce, mounded with bacon, swiss, cheddar, red star onions, on Kaiser.

I’d suggest a different roll since mine kept falling apart but overall one of best burgers I’ve had in awhile. The Red Star Onions were a bit much but by the end I couldn’t stop soakin up the bbq sauce with them.

Overall I LOVED this place and would absolutely drive back for a dinner there or to take some friends who want to get out of the Burgh for a bit. It’s less than an hour away and worth every mile of the drive.

Here are some pictures I took with my cameraphone.

I love my Giant Eagle Advantage card. The rules are $.10 off every $50 you spend at the store. The key for this kind of fat discount is not shopping there all the time but watching for the coupons for $1 off :)

cheers!

Do you Twitter?

September 5th, 2007 douglas No comments

I can’t believe I finally gave into Twitter. I considered it a useless tool until recently someone was looking for me and “hit the twit” for someone who could reach me. Mike Woycheck then told me a couple times people were looking for me. This ended up happening on multiple occasions so I gave it a try and was sucked right in. If you look down to the lower left side bar under RSS you can see my latest posting on Twitter.

Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging service that allows users to send “updates” (text-based posts, up to 140 characters long) via SMS, instant messaging, email, to the Twitter website, or an application.

Here’s the dilemma I ran into. Which name do I use? Most people expected me to use my name from the podcast, which I seriously considered and am widely known by, but I settled on my birth name. The reasoning is very simple, father spoon is only one side of many things I’ve started to create. Over the next year I’ll be releasing small projects I’ve started working on the side. When you get down to the root of it, it will be me. Hence this domain. I don’t do many things on a whim, everything has a reason. It was only a matter of time before I made Twitter a part of it.
